Vietnam stretches more than sixteen hundred kilometres from the Chinese border to the Mekong Delta, and it does not have one climate. It has three, and they rarely agree with each other. That is why the question of when to visit has no single answer, only a right answer for each region, and one short window when the whole country lines up.
The short answer
March and April are the most reliable months for Vietnam as a whole. The north is best from October to December and again in March and April, the centre is driest from roughly February to August, and the south is dry from December to April. If your dates are fixed, choose the regions that are in season rather than forcing a full route through all three.
The north: Hanoi, Halong Bay and the mountains
The north has a genuine winter. From December to February, Hanoi and Halong Bay are cool, often grey and misty, which is atmospheric over the limestone seascape but far from beach weather. From May to September the region turns hot and humid, with the summer rains at their heaviest. The sweet spots are October to December and March to April, when skies are clearer and temperatures comfortable for both the city and the trekking country around Sapa and Ha Giang.
The centre: Hue, Da Nang and Hoi An
The central coast follows its own calendar. Its heaviest rain falls roughly from September to December, when storms coming off the sea can bring genuine flooding in some years, and this is the region that most often disrupts a Vietnam itinerary. From around February to August the centre is largely dry and warm, and its beaches are at their best through the early summer.
The south: Ho Chi Minh City and the Mekong Delta
The south is tropical and simple. The dry season runs from December to April and the wet season from May to November, with rain that usually falls hard and briefly in the afternoon rather than all day. The south rarely breaks a trip: even in the wet months the mornings tend to be workable, and the delta is at its greenest.
Tet, the date to check first
Tet, the Vietnamese lunar new year, falls in late January or February and moves each year. It is the country’s biggest holiday: families travel en masse, trains and flights fill, and many shops and restaurants close for several days. It is a fascinating moment to be in Vietnam and a demanding one to travel through, so check the dates against yours before booking anything.
Halong Bay and the beaches, by season
Halong Bay sails all year, but what you see changes with the calendar. In the misty winter months from December to February the limestone towers appear and dissolve in grey light, which some travellers find the most atmospheric version of the bay and others find simply cold. For warmer, clearer conditions, aim for the north’s better windows, October to December or March to April, and spend a night on the water rather than a day trip so you have the bay in the early and late hours.
For beach time, the calendar splits the coastline in two. The central beaches around Da Nang and Hoi An are at their best in the dry months from roughly February to August. From December to April, the dry season moves the advantage south, to the coast and islands reached from Ho Chi Minh City. There is a good beach somewhere in Vietnam for most of the year; there is rarely a good beach everywhere at once.
Match the month to the direction
If you travel between March and May, run the classic route from north to south. Between September and November, do the opposite: start in the south and move up the country as the centre and the north come out of their rains. We covered the day-by-day logic in our fifteen-day Vietnam itinerary, and the direction of travel matters more than most travellers expect.
Frequently asked questions
When is the best time to visit Vietnam?
March and April are the most reliable months for the whole country at once. Outside that window, the north is best from October to December, the centre from February to August, and the south from December to April.
When is the rainy season in Vietnam?
It depends on the region. The north sees its heaviest rain from May to September, the centre from September to December, and the south from May to November, where showers are usually short and fall in the afternoon.
Is there a bad time to visit Vietnam?
No month rules out the whole country, but October and November bring the heaviest rain and occasional flooding to the central coast around Hue and Hoi An. If you travel then, give more time to the south and the north and keep the centre flexible.
When is Tet and does it affect travel?
Tet, the Vietnamese lunar new year, falls in late January or February and changes date each year. Transport and hotels fill up and many businesses close for several days, so itineraries need to be planned around it.
Is Vietnam good to visit in July and August?
Yes, with the right route. The central coast around Da Nang and Hoi An is in its dry season, while the north is hot and humid and the south sees short afternoon rains. Summer trips work best when they are built around the centre.
