Train crossing the Nine Arch Bridge in the tea country of Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka at a glance

Sri Lanka packs an unusual amount of country into one island: a UNESCO-listed Dutch fort at Galle, tea terraces at nearly 2,000 metres crossed by a slow local train, the ancient capitals and rock fortresses of the Cultural Triangle, national parks where elephants and leopards share the scrubland, and quiet beaches on the east coast. Add the Maldives, roughly 1h30 by air from Colombo, and one trip covers culture, wildlife, hiking and a water villa over the lagoon.

Where to go in Sri Lanka

Galle and the south

Galle’s old town is a walled Dutch fort listed by UNESCO, best walked in the late afternoon when the heat drops and locals come out to sit on the ramparts. Inland, the dry southern plains hold national parks known for elephants, crocodiles, water buffalo and a large endemic bird population, with safaris by 4×4 in the late light when the animals move.

The hill country: Ella, the tea terraces and Kandy

The hills are where Sri Lanka slows down and cools off. Ella is the walking base, with the Nine Arch Bridge, Little Adam’s Peak and the trek to Ella Rock, and Diyaluma, the island’s second-highest waterfall, within reach. The local train through the tea terraces at nearly 2,000 metres is genuinely better than the road. Kandy holds the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic, the most important Buddhist site in the country.

The Cultural Triangle: Sigiriya, Dambulla and Polonnaruwa

Three sites anchor the centre of the island. Sigiriya, the Lion Rock, is a fifth-century fortress on a two-hundred-metre granite outcrop, famous for its frescoes; the neighbouring rock of Pidurangala looks straight across at it. The Golden Temple of Dambulla is a complex of five painted cave temples, a place of worship for over two thousand years. Polonnaruwa, the second of the ancient royal capitals, has been on the UNESCO World Heritage List since 1982.

The east coast: Nilaveli and Trincomalee

Nilaveli, just north of Trincomalee, is the quiet counterpoint to the busier southern beaches: a long stretch of sand, small beachfront hotels, and a dry season that runs opposite to the south-west. It is where our circuit places its mid-trip pause.

And the Maldives, 1h30 away

The Maldives sit roughly 1h30 by air from Colombo, which makes them the natural ending to an active Sri Lanka itinerary: a few nights in a water villa on a single island, with a reef, a sandbank and nothing scheduled. Speedboat transfers from Malé run in daylight only, so the flight from Colombo is best taken in the morning.

This itinerary is a starting point, not a package. Every AZORA journey is built from scratch: routing, pace, hotel categories and length all move with you. Couples can also start from our Sri Lanka and Maldives honeymoon inspiration, or simply tell us what matters most.

When to go to Sri Lanka

There is no single best month. Sri Lanka has two monsoons that hit opposite coasts at opposite times: the Yala monsoon brings rain to the south and west from roughly May to September, and the Maha monsoon brings rain to the north and east from roughly December to February. The right answer depends on which coast matters more to you.

The Maldives follow their own pattern: roughly November to April is the drier north-east monsoon, May to October the wetter south-west monsoon. We go through Sri Lanka month by month, region by region, in our guide to the best time to visit Sri Lanka.

Good to know

Entry. Sri Lanka operates an online ETA system and the Maldives issue a free visa on arrival for most nationalities. Requirements change; check your own government’s travel advice before booking, and we send a method sheet for the ETA application with every confirmed trip.

Getting around. Distances deceive: Sri Lankan roads are slow, and 100 kilometres regularly takes three hours. Our journeys use a private vehicle with an English-speaking driver, plus the classic train leg through the tea country. International flights to Colombo are booked via our flight page.

Etiquette. Shoulders and knees covered at Buddhist and Hindu sites, shoes off before entering, and never turn your back to a Buddha image for a photograph.

Wildlife. Safaris are by 4×4. We do not offer, arrange or recommend elephant riding on any AZORA programme.

How AZORA builds your trip to Sri Lanka

1. Tell us what you have in mind. Use the form below or our quotation page and share your dates, the number of travellers, your budget range, your pace and the experiences you do not want to miss. Nothing is fixed at this stage.

2. We design a first itinerary. Within a few days you receive a day-by-day proposal with hotels, transfers and activities, priced for your dates and group size. Every element can be swapped, added or removed.

3. We refine until it fits, then we handle the ground. Once the programme is right, AZORA books everything, coordinates our local partners and stays reachable throughout your trip. International flights are arranged separately so you keep control over your routing.

Frequently asked questions

When is the best time to visit Sri Lanka?

There is no single best month. The south and west coasts are driest from December to March, the north and east from May to September, because two opposing monsoons hit opposite coasts at opposite times. A well-built itinerary places the beach days on whichever coast is in season.

How many days do you need in Sri Lanka?

Ten to eleven days covers the south, hill country, east coast and Cultural Triangle without rushing. With a Maldives extension, fourteen days is the practical minimum: ten nights in Sri Lanka and three in the Maldives.

Can you combine Sri Lanka with the Maldives?

Yes, and it is one of the most natural pairings in the region: the Maldives sit roughly 1h30 by air from Colombo. Three nights in a water villa is enough to feel like a stay rather than a stopover, and the leg adds roughly 1,200 € per person to a Sri Lanka itinerary.

Do you need a visa for Sri Lanka?

Sri Lanka operates an online ETA system, applied for before departure, and the Maldives issue a free visa on arrival for most nationalities. Requirements change, so check your own government’s travel advice before booking.

Is Sri Lanka good for a honeymoon?

Yes. The mix of tea hills, ancient sites, safari and beach in one compact island, with the option of ending in a Maldives water villa, makes it one of the most requested honeymoon combinations we build. A private symbolic beach ceremony can be arranged on the east coast.

How do you get around Sri Lanka?

On our journeys, by private vehicle with an English-speaking driver, plus one leg on the local train through the tea country. Roads are slow, so itineraries are built around realistic driving times rather than map distances.
