The Caribbean region of Costa Rica is a mixture of beaches and Afro-Caribbean culture found nowhere else in the country, found in the cities of Tortuguero, Cahuita, Puerto Viejo and Manzanillo. Green turtle nesting season begins on the beaches of Tortuguero National Park and Barra del Colorado National Wildlife Refuge. This is one of the most popular attractions in the area.

The region’s world-class beaches are lined with lush vegetation and offer a mix of adventure, leisure and nature activities complemented by local culture, cuisine and music. Popular options in the area include coral reefs, colorful sandy beaches (black, yellow and grey), coastal and mountain forests.

Cahuita National Park and Gandoka Manzanillo Reserve are internationally renowned not only for their natural beauty, but also for the conservation status of the Costa Rica’s Caribbean coast.

The Barra del Colorado sector ranks as the best location for sport fishing for species such as sea bass and Atlantic tarpon. Other activities include birdwatching and observing local flora and fauna. The river canals that connect Puerto Moines with Tortuguero and Barra del Colorado are unique attractions that are also the region’s main means of transportation.

Limonense’s cuisine is heavily influenced by Afro-his Costa Rican and Chinese cultures. In addition to cooking methods of food, these groups also introduced a variety of plants not found elsewhere. The Caribbean hosts a wide variety of cultural, sporting, civic and artistic activities, including the Limon Carnival held in October to mark Culture Day. These celebrations reflect the history, culture and personality of the Caribbean.
