Camelo and the surrounding region are also renowned for their wineries and the excellent wines they produce.

It then continues north through Nueva Palmira to the town of Mercedes on the banks of the Río Negro. As you stroll through its neighborhoods, you’ll enjoy a varied beauty of architectural styles. But its greatest asset is its beautiful boulevard. Don’t hesitate to use it to stroll along the river.

Day 5:

On the way to Paysandú, we invite you to stop off in the beautiful town of Fray Bentos. In particular, we recommend a visit to the former Anglo industrial district, designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in July 2015. The “Frigorifico Anglo del Uruguay” was one of Uruguay’s main agro-industries during the 20th century, and one of South America’s most important meat-processing plants (corned beef).

When you arrive in Paysandú, don’t miss the hot springs. Take a stroll along the port and the rambla. On the outskirts of Paysandú, discover the Queguay waterfall, stroll through the Rincon de Perez forest or visit the Cueva del Tigre cave, home to vampire bats.

A little further south, Pasos de los Toros retains the natural charm of the ancient Hum des Charrúas river. The Rincón del Bonete dam, with its huge lake, is an ideal destination for relaxation. Freshwater beaches are another of the region’s attractions. The town was the birthplace of the famous writer Mario Benedetti. A must for culture, water sports and fishing enthusiasts.

The region is characterized by a landscape of rolling hill chains, which, together with its vegetation, rich flora and fauna, provide an idyllic environment in which to recharge your batteries. Don’t miss Cerro Artigas, where you’ll find a monument to our Uruguayan hero on horseback and a panoramic view of the city.

We invite you to stop off at the pretty seaside resort of Piriápolis. It boasts a magnificent seafront. In summer, it’s a popular family resort, and we invite you to walk along its pretty rambla. If you feel like it, climb to the top of Cerro Antonio for a superb panoramic view of Piriápolis.

In Punta del Este, we recommend a boat trip to Sea Lion Island. This nature reserve is home to over 250,000 mammals.
