Where to go in Argentina<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Buenos Aires<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Tango in San Telmo, the coloured houses of La Boca, the cemetery of Recoleta, the bookshops of Palermo and long dinners in parrillas. Two to three nights at the start or end of the trip, or both, since most domestic flights pass through the capital.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Iguaz\u00fa Falls<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

The Argentine side of the falls, listed by UNESCO, is a network of walkways through the forest that ends above the Devil’s Throat. Two nights are enough, and the Brazilian side can be visited in half a day. Iguaz\u00fa also combines easily with Uruguay<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Salta and the Northwest<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Salta is the base for the Quebrada de Humahuaca, a valley of multicoloured mountains listed by UNESCO, the salt flats of Salinas Grandes, the vineyards of Cafayate and the adobe villages of the Puna. A road trip of four to six days, ideally with a driver.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mendoza and the wine country<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

At the foot of Aconcagua, the highest peak in the Americas, Mendoza produces most of Argentina’s Malbec. Wineries with restaurants, lodges among the vines and mountain excursions make it a natural two- or three-night pause between the north and the south.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

El Calafate and El Chalt\u00e9n<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

The Perito Moreno glacier, in Los Glaciares national park, is the most accessible large glacier in the world, seen from walkways or from a boat. Three hours north, El Chalt\u00e9n is the trekking capital of the country, with day hikes to the foot of Fitz Roy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Bariloche and the Lake District<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Lakes, forests and mountains around San Carlos de Bariloche, with the scenic Route of the Seven Lakes towards San Mart\u00edn de los Andes. A gentler Patagonia, good for families and for crossing into Chile by boat and bus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Pen\u00ednsula Vald\u00e9s and Ushuaia<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

On the Atlantic coast, Pen\u00ednsula Vald\u00e9s, listed by UNESCO, is one of the best places in the world to watch southern right whales, roughly from June to December, along with sea lions, elephant seals and penguins. At the southern tip, Ushuaia opens onto the Beagle Channel and Tierra del Fuego national park.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n

When to go to Argentina<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Argentina stretches over more than 3,500 kilometres from north to south, so the seasons differ by region. Patagonia is best from October to April, with the longest days around December and January. The Northwest is drier and more comfortable from April to November. Buenos Aires and Mendoza are most pleasant in spring and autumn, with the grape harvest in March. Iguaz\u00fa can be visited all year, with the highest water usually after the summer rains. Whale watching at Pen\u00ednsula Vald\u00e9s runs roughly from June to December.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

How long to stay<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Twelve days cover Buenos Aires, Iguaz\u00fa and one Patagonian base such as El Calafate. Two to three weeks allow the Northwest or Mendoza as well, or a deeper Patagonia with El Chalt\u00e9n, Bariloche or Ushuaia. As in Brazil and Chile, every region means a flight, so we keep the number of stops reasonable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Getting around Argentina<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Domestic flights, most of them via Buenos Aires, connect the regions. Locally, private transfers with a driver-guide are the norm in the Northwest and Patagonia, while a rental car works well around Mendoza and Bariloche. A ferry links Buenos Aires with Colonia and Montevideo in Uruguay. Domestic flights included in a programme are always part of the AZORA price.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
